Keeping Afama Mino girls in school

Girls are more likely to drop out of school than boys in Afama Mino Kebele, a village 15 km from Dubbo, Ethiopia.

Girls often miss school days during their period, because of lack of menstrual hygiene products, and for fear of being mocked by their school mates.

The outreach teams of St. Mary Hospital visits Afama Mino twice a week and has started supporting school girls with education on menstrual health, hygiene and management, to ensure girls are informed correctly about menstruation, and with hygienic kits, to make sure they don't miss school days during their period.

However, poverty keeps hindering their regular attendance to school, as often their parents cannot afford to pay school fees and scholastic materials.

This is why, we want to provide additional support to 200 vulnerable girls enrolled in Afama Mino primary school.

With $ 10 we can buy a kit including:

  • 10 exercise books

  • 5 pens

  • 5 pencils

  • 1 ruler

  • 2 erasers

With $ 2,000 we can buy 200 kits.

A new home for Asrat and her children

Asrat is a mother to 4 children, the eldest her first marriage, and the other 3 from the second. Since her second husband left, she is the only breadwinner of the family.

She lives in a hut in Addila kebele, a small village in Boloso Sore woreda, Ethiopia. However, every day she has to travel 7-8 km to get daily employment to get some income to be able to feed her children and buy them clothes.

Asrat’s family is just one of the many vulnerable households living in Boloso Sore Woreda, mostly female headed, who struggle to produce enough food from their small plots of land, and to generate enough income to cater for basic needs of their children, such as providing decent housing, feeding and clothing.

With $ 400 USD we shall help Asrat to build a proper shelter with locally available material, and to buy clothing for their children to have a decent life.

With $ 2,000 we can support Asrat and 4 more families to build their home.

Oxygen for St. Mary Hospital NICU

Since the opening of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St. Mary Hospital, Dubbo, Ethiopia, in 2022, 393 newborns have received lifesaving support.

Oxygen therapy is key for neonates to recover and have a good start in life. However, securing supplies of oxygen in Dubbo is becoming difficult, because of the increased cost of transport.

With $ 2,000 we can secure 2,555 oxygen cylinders, which will allow St. Mary Hospital to provide intensive care to 50 newborns over a period of 3 months.
